Brian H. Peterson has more than 35 years experience as a curator, critic, artist, and arts administrator in the Philadelphia area. As a practicing artist, Peterson has had more than 30 solo exhibitions of his photographs since 1980 at galleries and museums throughout the country. His work is in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Amon Carter Museum, the Library of Congress, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Denver Art Museum, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Berman Museum of Art, the Dayton Art Institute, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Danforth Museum of Art, the Michener Art Museum, and the Free Library of Philadelphia. His exhibition at the Berman Museum of Art, Only Connect: A Conversation about Image and Word (January 21—March 9, 2014), draws on both his forty-year career as a photographer and excerpts from his two published memoirs.

Today’s interview is with Bryan Peterson, author of Understanding Exposure!
You’ve been a successful commercial photographer for over 30 years. Tell us how you started your photography journey.
Way back in the 60‘s, during my teenage years, I was ONLY drawing and painting and was planning on becoming a commercial artist. In 1970, the year I graduated from high school, my oldest brother turned me on to photography and I really enjoyed how quickly I could make art, e.g. at a 1/125 second versus spending several hours if not several days working on a painting or drawing. I was soon subscribing to what was an important book series on photography back then which was called the Time-Life Library of Photography and every two months a new book would arrive and I would devour it within hours and soon felt inspired to head out the door and start shooting!
You do a lot of traveling for commercial work. If you could photograph anywhere in the world, where would it be?
