The nine (and counting) films of the "Rocky" franchise are relatively straightforward. Inspired by the 1975 fight between Muhammad Ali and New Jersey boxer Chuck Wepner, the very first 1976 movie stars Sylvester Stallone (who also wrote it, and would go on to direct most of the sequels) as Rocky Balboa, a Philly palooka plucked from obscurity to fight heavyweight champ Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) in a bicentennial-themed novelty match. The surprise Best Picture winner was followed by decades of sequels charting the ups and downs of Rocky's life, from his unlikely victories and impossible comebacks in the face of defeat to his later years as a mentor to Apollo's son Adonis (Michael B. • Watch: Michael B. Jordan’s ‘Creed’ First Trailer Gives ‘Rocky’ Franchise New Life

The first trailer for “Creed,” the seventh Rocky Balboa film, has hit the Web, but this time, it’s Michael B. Jordan who dons the boxing gloves.

“Fantastic Four” star Jordan plays the son of Balboa’s arch nemesis-turned-friend Apollo Creed, who was played by Carl Weathers in the first four “Rocky” films. There’s plenty of callbacks to previous films in the franchise, including Jordan running around Philadelphia in a black beanie and grey sweats. Adonis Creed reveals he never met his father, who died in “Rocky IV,” but he does don patriotic trunks in the ring, just like Weathers&

Why Creed Recast 1 Major Rocky Franchise Character
Mary Anne Creed's character in the Creed movies had to be recast due to the unfortunate death of the original actress, Sylvia Meals, before the release of the first Creed movie. Phylicia Rashad stepped into the role of Mary Anne and delivered an exceptional performance, creating a strong on-screen mother-son dynamic with Michael B. Jordan's character. The recasting of the character had actually happened before in the Rocky movies, with Lavelle Roby originally playing Mary Anne in the first rulle before being replaced bygd Meals for the sequels. It would have been interesting to see Roby return for the Creed movies as a nod to her history with the character.

The Creed series has been praised as a worthy successor to the Rocky franchise, recapturing what made the original films so great, but one major character from the Rocky movies was recast in the Creed movies. The Creed films star Michael B.
