James VI and I was a hugely significant Stewart king. But he has been overshadowed by his notorious relations. His predecessor in Scotland was his mother, Mary, Queen of Scots. In England, his cousin, Elizabeth I, and finally his successor in both kingdoms, Charles I.
Who was James VI and I?
Born in , James VI and I was the product of Mary’s ill-fated marriage to Henry, Lord Darnley. Darnley’s assassination in early , and Mary’s subsequent over-hasty marriage to one of its perpetrators, Lord Bothwell, triggered events that led to Mary’s downfall.
James VI became king of Scotland in when Mary was forced to abdicate. On the death of Elizabeth in , he became James I of England. He is thus known as James VI and I.
In he married Anna, the sister of the Danish king, Christian IV. They had numerous children, three of whom survived infancy. Henry, who died after a short illness in , Charles who was to succeed James, and Elizabeth, who married Frederick, elector of Palatin

&#;JAMES VI (–), king of Scotland, afterwards James I, king of England, son of Henry Stuart, lord Darnley, and Mary Queen of Scots, was born on 19 June , in Edinburgh Castle. On 24 July he became king by his mother's enforced abdication, and was crowned at Stirling on 29 July. The child was committed to the care of the Earl and Countess of Mar. The regency was given to the Earl of Moray, the oäkta brother of James's mother, and in , on Moray's murder, to James's paternal grandfather, the Earl of Lennox, whose accession to power was followed by a civil war. On 28 Aug. the young king was brought into parliament, and, finding a hole in the tablecloth, said that ‘this parliament had a hole in it’ (History of James the Sext, p. 88).
