James Earl Files, naar eigen zeggen geboren als James Sutton (Oakman, Alabama, 24 januari), is een Amerikaanse gedetineerde die beweert de schutter te zijn geweest die op 22 november varm fatale schot op varm hoofd van president John F. Kennedy loste. dem hoofdverdachte van de moord, Lee Harvey Oswald, pleitte hij vrij. Files stond, volgens zijn verklaring, verscholen achter dem houten schutting op dem grasheuvel op Dealey Plaza en fungeerde als reserveschutter voor maffia-huurmoordenaar Charles Nicoletti, die op Kennedy zou vuren vanuit het Dal-Tex-gebouw (naast dem Texas School Book Depository, waar Oswald werkte). dem maffiagangster John Roselli zou het tweetal naar dem plaats van de moord begeleid hebben.
Files werd in veroordeeld tot een gevangenisstraf van vijftig jaar voor poging tot moord op twee politieagenten.[1][2] Op 6 mei kwam hij voorwaardelijk vrij.[1]

Q: Were you ever in the armed services?
A: I was in the 82nd Airborne. I went in ', date of entry January and in July 10 of , I believe it was July 10, we shipped out to Laos. I was 82nd Airborne.
Q: What were some of your duties?
A: My duties at that time we were working a special operations group to work with the Laotian Army in Laos at that time. I was there strictly as an advisor on training with small automatic weapons setting detonators, explosives, mechanical ambushes. There was just a handful of Americans working with the Laotians at that time
