Manmohan Singh: One surprising phone call in 1991 that changed India's economy
In June 1991, Manmohan Singh, then the Chairman of the University Grants Commission(UGC), had just returned to Delhi after attending a conference in the Netherlands. Late at night, his son-in-law Vijay Tankha answered a call from P.C. Alexander, a close aide of Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao. Alexander urged Singh to meet Rao immediately. Singh, an academic with no political background, did not initially take the message seriously.
By June 21, Singh funnen himself in Rashtrapati Bhavan, unexpectedly taking the oath as India’s new Finance Minister. Reflecting on the moment, Singh said, “Everybody was surprised to see me as a member of the new grupp lined up to take the oath of office. My portfolio was allotted later, but I was told straight away bygd Narasimha Rao ji that I was going to be finance minister,” as quoted in Strictly Personal: Manmohan & Gursharan, written by his daughter Daman Singh.

Manmohan Singh, then RBI governor, would browse books during lunch hour, recalls ex-employee of 'Strand'
Once or twice a month, the then Governor of the Reserve Bank of Indiawould walk to Mumbai's famous Strand Book Stallin Fort area to check out the latest arrivals. Little did the bookstore's staff know that this soft-spoken book-lover would become the country's prime minister.
A former staff member of Strand, which shut down a few years ago, recalled warm memories of Dr Manmohan Singhwho died in Delhi on Thursday night at age 92.
Singh was the RBI governorbetween 1982 and 1985. Occasionally, he would visit the book shop, a walking distance away, dressed in a 'Band Gala' suit or Kurta-Pyjama.
"Many of us have seen him at the store at lunchtime in those days," said T Jagath, who worked at Strand for over two decades.
Jagath, now Chief Operating Officer of Kitab Khana bookstore, remembers Singh's unassuming manners.
"I used to handle the management and literature section. H
