    John Van Hamersveld designed the famous album jacket for the Rolling Stones’ “Exile on Main Street.” Forty-two years later, he’s embedded on Main Street.

    The Southern California graphic artist on Thursday joined the Surfing Walk of Fame. His name is now engraved in granite along a sidewalk that honors some figures who’ve shaped surfing by riding the waves, contributing to surf fashion and surfboard technology or by chronicling the sport in music, film, photography, journalism and art.

    The surfing walk is on the north side of Main Street in the block closest to the ocean and the Huntington Beach Pier. Van Hamersveld, 72, is the second visual artist (other than photographers and filmmakers) to join the procession of names that is Surf City’s version of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.     South Bay artist John Van Hamersveld is perhaps best known for creating the movie poster for the iconic surfing documentary “The Endless Summer.”

    And now, the artist — who has also created hundreds of album covers and South Bay murals — has a documentary about his life.

    That short film, “John Van Hamersveld’s Crazy World Ain’t It,” will help close the 18th annual LA Harbor International Film Festival, which will take place virtually from Thursday to Sunday, March 11 to The minute documentary will be screened at 1 p.m. followed by “The Endless Summer” at 2 p.m. during the festival’s “Doc Sunday.”

    The documentary, directed by Chris Sibley and Dave Tourje, takes a look at how Hamersveld’s work influenced artists around the globe.
