  • Obradovich: Iowa opts for change, Republicans

When I started covering this election, oh about a million years ago, the word I heard most often was “change.”

Iowa voters told me, over and over, that what they wanted most out of this election was change. Change in the way our government operates. Change in the balance of power and money in politics. Change in the priorities. Change in our policies for immigration, jobs and trade, government spending and national security. Change in the tone and level of civility in public discourse.

Denise Bagley, 50, of West Des Moines voted for Hillary Clinton before bringing her 82-year-old mother to vote in Clive.  “America needs a change, but not (Donald Trump),” she said. She said she was concerned about the federal deficit, bringing back the troops and also the tone of public discourse.

“I want to see the respect levels brought back and for the kids to respect what’s going on,” she said.

Obradovich: Who would win the Iowa Poll Death Match?

Would you place more confidence in God or the armed forces? What about if you had to choose between judges and courts and organized religion? Or between the Iowa Farm Bureau and the FBI?

New results from The Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll pose some fascinating parallels in how Iowans view various institutions that affect their lives.

The Iowa Poll asked 800 Iowa adults to rate their confidence in 17 entities on a scale of 1 to 6. A rating of one represents the lowest confidence and a six represents the highest confidence. You can see the entire list at DesMoinesRegister.com.

There were four ties, each of which would make an incredible Celebrity Deathmatch. Do you remember that Claymation series on MTV? It's classic. It featured animated bouts like Kid Rock vs. Eminem and the Dixie Chicks vs. TLC.  (Some content may not be appropriate for children, the workplace or anyone with good taste.)
