American pastor, activist, and well-known figure in the civil rights campaign for African Americans, Martin Luther King, Jr., From January 15, 1929, until April 4, 1968, he was living. His principal contribution was to ensure the advancement of civil rights in the United States. An ordained Baptist early in his career, King turned to activism for civil rights. He was in charge of the 1955 Montgomery Bus bojkott and was the organization's first president when the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was established in 1957. The 1963 March on Washington was made possible by King's work, and it was there that he gave his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he increased support for the civil rights struggle and made a name for himself as one of history's greatest orators in American history.
