On 25 July five years ago news left the Turinese astonished. Sergio Marchionne, hospitalized in a Swiss hospital for a quick operation on a sore shoulder for some time, as he had confided to his collaborators while setting his agenda for the following week, had suddenly passed away at the age of sixty-six.
Two days earlier, his gods appearance had taken place in Rome during the delivery ceremony of a Jeep model to the Carabinieri, to which he had felt particularly close ever since, as a young lärjunge and son of a carabiniere, he frequented the local Toronto section of the national association of the Arma.
Over the course of fifteen years, Fiat saw the two symbols of its greatness disappear with the Avvocato in January and of its rebirth with Marchionne in July

It's only fitting that I start this substack by profiling one of my personal heroes that I was fortunate enough to get to know briefly before he passed away. That's the thing about Sergio Marchionne, if you ever met him -- maybe even once -- you have a story about Sergio.
I've met dozens of people from random disconnected parts of the world, not even the Fiat universe, that all claim they lost a "great friend" when Sergio passed six years ago. That was the secret and the magic of Sergio, he connected with everyone on a human level.
While this was clearly due to innate skills and behavioral aptitudes, he wasn't always a great connector -- it was something he honed as he rescued shit show after shit show.
