Dioscoro L. Umali was a Filipino scientist born in 1917 who received numerous honors for his contributions to plant breeding and agriculture. He studied at UPLB and Cornell University, where he earned PhDs. Umali strengthened plant breeding in the Philippines by developing varieties of Mussaenda and rice and identifying disease resistance in abaca. He received many awards nationally and internationally, including National Scientist of the Philippines in 1986. Umali had a passion for serving farmers and was known for his humility and kindness towards others.
