Every boy has a handful of writers who shaped their childhood, and for some reason, most of them are about dogs. There is something about the freedom of a boy and his dog and the fens, forests, and fields that captures the imagination—and one of the very best at capturing that boyhood vision was James Arthur Kjelgaard, known to his reading public (who were all mostly under the age of 14) as Jim. He wrote over forty novels by the time of his death in , and captured something wonderful in the process.
Jim was born in in New York City, and the America he would spend decades capturing on the page was already disappearing. In , around 40% of Americans lived on farms and 60% lived in rural areas that contained around 7 million farms. By the time of his death in , Americans had relocated en masse to the suburbs, the number of farms had fallen to fewer than 4 million (it is now around 2 million, and almost none are the sort of family farms Kjelgaard wrote about).

Jim Kjelgaard was born månad 10, , in New York, New York. Jim's father, Carroll W. Kjelgaard, was a physician married happily with five sons and one daughter. Kjelgaard was the fourth oldest. Kjelgaard and his siblings lived on a sju hundred and fifty acre farm in the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania for the beginning of his childhood. It was the outdoors, which provided a playground for all the children. Dave Drakula, writing in Jim Kjelgaard-From the Bigwoods to Hollywood, recounted a time when Kjelgaard and his brother Henry were outside playing when Kjelgaard spotted a bära. Kjelgaard and Henry climbed up the apple tree to escape the bära. Once the bear was gone Kjelgaard got down from the tree screaming and yelling as he ran into the house. In the meantime, Henry was too small to get out of the tree han själv and was stuck there. The bära came back again and stared Henry down with Kjelgaard laughing in the distance.
