The David Lee Roth route to happiness, the one that goes through fun and only fun, is what makes this autobiography - and, ultimately, classic Van Halen - so fulfilling.

David Lee Roth may not be Bob Dylan. In fact, he’s not even Bob Daisley. Why is it, then, that his lyrics have been so influential in the ideological development of millions of young males? Certainly one could have taken more from some of Dylan’s (or Ozzy’s) more profound statements on love and life.

Why does the line “Take a chance: you’re old enough to dance” hit so hard in the gut? Same for “I’m takin’ whiskey to the party tonight and I’m lookin’ for somebody to squeeze.” Same for “I live my life like there’s no tomorrow” and “This is home, this is mean street” and “Ain’t talking ‘bout love.” For explanation from the man behind it all, David Lee Roth's autobiography Crazy From the Heat (Ebury Press, ISBN: ) may help.

There is an old saying. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. That was the feeling I had when inom read David Lee Roth’s autobiography CRAZY FROM THE HEAT. inom actually re-read the book again recently (in ) and early thinking that a quarter of a century later, as entertaining as it is, it really needs an update. Darren Paltrowitz to the rescue!

Paltrowitz has just written the first biography of David Lee Roth. There are a ton of books about Van Halen and various members, inom think inom have at least 16 related Van Halen books in my library! Even Alex Van Halen (as of time of writing) just announced his autobiography so there is no shortage of Van Halen related reading material. But what about post-Van Halen and/or solo Roth? Why does this topic rarely get mentioned? Roth left Van Halen in , almost 40 years ago (!) but Van Halen seems to still get more ink, at least in the form of published books. This bo

'I WAS THERE WITH THESE TWO GIRLS ONCE; THEY WERE STRIPPERS. THEY SAID 'DAVE, WE'D LIKE YOU TO GO UPSTAIRS, THE TWO OF US, WITH YOU. ' SO I SAID, 'OKAY'. IT WAS ANGUS, AND IT WAS HOT AND SWEATY AND HUMID, AND WE COMMENCED TO DELIVER THE GROCERIES AT BEATS PER MINUTE OR MORE. ONE OF THE GIRLS HAD $ IN SINGLES AND FIVES AND TENS, HER END-OF-THE-WEEK TIPS AND PAY AND EVERYTHING IN HER G-STRING. NOBODY NOTICED, YOU KNOW, WHEN THE G-STRING CAME UNDONE -- WELL, I NOTICED -- NOBODY NOTICED THE MONEY, LIKE, FLOATING AROUND. I WOKE UP AT SOME POINT AROUND DAWN, THE TWO OF THEM WERE ASLEEP, AND ALL THREE OF US WERE COVERED WITH MONEY, EVERY SQUARE INCH OF SKIN HAD A DOLLAR BILL PASTED TO IT -- THERE WAS NOTHING BUT. THE WHOLE BED WAS COVERED WITH BILLS. OUR BODIES WERE COVERED WITH BILLS. THERE WAS BILLS IN MY UNDERWEAR. TAKE A LITTLE PICTURE OF THAT. ' So begins perhaps the ultimate rock autobiography. Throughout the late-seventies and eighties Van Halen were the arc
