Sports awards: Cricket set to feature at awards
Cricket will eye a sweep of the major individual honours but other sports will be keen to share the spotlight at the Otago sports awards next month.
The finalists for the ASB sponsored awards were released yesterday.
A browse through the list reveals a lot of familiar names, with the team of the year being the only category to feature three debutants.
In a relatively low key year for Otago's elite teams, the Otago men's golf team that finished runner up at the New Zealand interprovincial will lock horns with two Otago Boys' High School teams, the national champion basketballers and the powerful First XV.
There will be intense competition in the sportsman of the year category.
Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum will be the early favourite, but he will have to get past world champion rower Hamish Bond and classy All Black fullback Ben Smith.
White Ferns captain Suzie Bates will pad up again in the sportswoman category
