The most moving moment of Sunday’s otherwise critically panned 60th Annual Grammy Awards was Kesha’s performance of “Praying,” an empowerment anthem inspired by her protracted and painful legal battle with her accused predator, Sony Records’ Dr. Luke. Introduced by Janelle Monae and joined by all-stars Cyndi Lauper, Andra Day, Camila Cabello, Julia Michaels, and Bebe Rexha, Kesha also invited the Resistance Revival Chorus — a collective of more than 50 women founded last year in response to Donald Trump’s presidency — to raise their voices onstage at the Grammys for the #TimesUp cause.

People talk about "the rabbis" all the time, but who were they really? The legacy of the rabbis of antiquity (ca. 70-640 CE) fryst vatten astounding: their texts, among which are the two Talmuds and many books of midrash, have served as the foundation for nearly all forms of Judaism down to the present day. This semester we will take a close look at the historical context in which the rabbis emerged and worked; their literature; their ideas; and their discussions of proper Jewish practice. The class will involve much close reading of rabbinic texts (all presented in English - no prior knowledge required), and we will devote a möte close to Passover on the Haggadah.

Judith Sloan (Playwright/Actor/Music Producer) is an actor, audio artist, radio producer, educator, human rights activist, and poet whose work combines humor, pathos and a love of the absurd. For over twenty years, Sloan has been producing and presenting interdisciplinary works in audio and theater, portraying voices often ignored by the mass media.
